Adaptil or Aptus Relax - which should you choose for your dog?

What do Adaptil and Aptus have in common?

Adaptil and Aptus are designed to reduce your dog's stress levels. It's a natural medicine so don't worry, even if you want to give it to your dog for longer periods of time. It doesn't have a sedative effect, so if you have a dog that is very, very scared of fireworks, for example, you can talk to your vet about whether they should be sedated instead.

Aptus Relax

Aptus relax are small chews that contain a range of natural stress-relieving ingredients. This means that your dog systematically absorbs the ingredients. The effect starts when your dog absorbs the chew, it usually takes about 30 minutes from the time you give the chew until your dog feels an effect. The effect is strongest in the first 3-5 hours and then diminishes over 24 hours.

It may be beneficial to give your dog Aptus Relax for several days in a row, as stress hormones stay in the body for a long time in animals, as they do in humans.

The effectiveness of Aptus depends on your dog's response to L-tryptophan.
How much impact L-tryptophan, among others, has on your dog and its ability to absorb it. There is no \"one size\" fits all as every dog reacts differently, however, we do get good feedback.

Disadvantages of Aptus Relax:
Some dogs tend to vomit when they are very stressed and the product is also not suitable if your dog suffers from motion sickness, as they are also at risk of vomiting.

Adaptil

We have Adaptil as a collar and as a defuser that plugs into the wall socket and covers an area of 70 square meters. Adaptil, unlike aptus, is not something your dog has to ingest, Adaptil is artificially produced pheromones. The pheromones produced are the same \"signal substance\" that a mother dog secretes when she nurses her puppies and is associated with great security and well-being.

The purpose of Adaptil is for your dog to associate this 'signal substance' with reassurance and for its stress levels to decrease as a result.

Does Adaptil work: Whether your dog is very or slightly sensitive to pheromones is impossible to say, as it is very individual to your dog. It can take up to a week for you to notice a change in your dog, but that doesn't mean your dog hasn't felt it before, stress just takes a long time to get out of the body.

Disadvantages of Adaptil:
The collar has to be worn for 4 weeks and although it is small and discreet, it is not exactly the prettiest collar. However, if your dog is bathing, the collar should be removed anyway, as its effectiveness is reduced when it is in contact with water.
