Dog parks in Copenhagen: Our favorites
As a dog owner in Copenhagen, it's nice to know where you can let your dog run free - both because it's not allowed in many places, and because as a Copenhagener, you rarely have a large garden where your dog can use up its energy.
There are many guides to dog parks, dog forests and dog beaches in Copenhagen and the surrounding area - but here we share our personal favorites.
Before you read any further: We have a joint recommendation for the free-run area at Christianshavns Vold , which is the perfect place to take your dog if you happen to be visiting Hunni (or live nearby).
Transportation:
- Christianshavns Vold: 5 minutes walk from Christianshavn Station (metro M1/M2). There are also parking options in the surrounding streets.
- Vermlandsgade: Buses 37 and 5C stop nearby, and there are parking options along Kløvermarksvej.

1. Søndermarken and Valbyparken
Ida and Ellen (Jack Russell Terrier) alternate between Søndermarken and Valbyparken depending on the season. In the winter they prefer Søndermarken , where Ida can take a cup of coffee with her on the walk, and Ellen can quench her thirst at the water tap in the park. In the summer, Valbyparken is a hit – the long paths and dog beach are perfect for a good run, and Ellen loves to take a dip!
Transportation:
- Søndermarken: At Roskildevej, opposite Frederiksberg Have. S-train to Carlsberg Station (approx. 5 min. walk) or bus 7A, 9A and 26.
- Valbyparken: Free parking at Hammelstrupvej. S-train to Ny Ellebjerg Station or Sjælør Station and walk 10–15 minutes.
2. Bernstorffsparken and the dog park in Fælledparken
Louise's dog Pablo (English Cocker Spaniel) needs to run free sometimes. He is curious and playful, but good at sniffing around on his own paw. Bernstorffsparken is ideal – here you can both walk in the green forest edges and enjoy the large open meadow. Louise often uses the area in the cooler months, when Pablo doesn't get too hot from all the running.
If the dog park in Fælledparken is empty or almost empty, they go there too. Louise enjoys a coffee in the sun on one of the benches, while Pablo is allowed to explore.
Nana and her pug Vega live on Amager, but also love a trip to Bernstorffsparken when sidewalk walks get a bit boring. It has everything they need: a kiosk, benches, a water fountain for dogs – and sometimes dog meet-ups where Vega can meet other pugs.
Transportation:
- Bernstorffsparken: Free parking at Jægersborg Allé. S-train line C to Jægersborg Station (approx. 10 min. walk). Buses 179 and 192 stop nearby.
- Fælledparken: Centrally located in Østerbro. Buses 1A, 14 and 184 (including at Øster Allé). Bicycle racks and parking in the side streets.
3. Amager Nature Park
Line's gentle giant Alfred (Labradoodle) is reactive and a bit sensitive, so they have found a sanctuary in Naturpark Amager . There is plenty of space here for Alfred to walk and sniff in peace. The park is also close to the shooting range, which makes it possible to train his reaction to loud noises in a safe environment.
A little extra tip from Line: She uses dog trainers from Alix & The Pack with a focus on reactive dogs.
Transport: Free parking at Amager Nature Center (Granatvej 3, Kastrup) and Kalvebod Fælled . Metro to Vestamager Station (M1), directly at the entrance.
When your dog doesn't get along with other dogs
If your dog doesn't thrive in large groups, try visiting in the morning or evening when there are fewer dogs. It's worth remembering that not all dogs need dog parks. If your dog doesn't like other dogs - or if you want to limit its socialization - that's okay. Your dog can easily have a safe and happy life without dog parks. Also, avoid toys if there are many dogs - this can cause conflicts.
Equipment for the trip to the dog park
A good walk in the dog park doesn't require much - but the right equipment makes the experience both easier and more fun:
