Fur care for Shih Tzu
The challenge with grooming this small dog is that the fine, long fur easily tangles and creates knots. This is a dog that requires a lot of grooming, and the choice of products is far from unimportant.
The Shih Tzu has a long coat with a dense undercoat that should preferably be brushed daily.
To maintain a fine coat that is not just something to do right after your dog has been to the groomer, we recommend a weekly bath for your Shih Tzu, using both dog shampoo and dog conditioner. Feel free to use a leave-in conditioner spray when brushing your dog throughout the week to soften the coat and make brushing more comfortable.
Dog collar for shih tzu
The challenge with collars for shih tzu is that the long, smooth fur tangles and easily makes knots. It can therefore be an advantage to have a smooth and round collar. Another important detail is that the collar must not be too heavy, as it is a small dog.
We recommend the round-stitched collars from Hunter or the smooth nylon collars from The Painter's Wife, among others. Both types of collars are completely lightweight, so even small dogs can wear them without any problems.
Dog harnesses for shih tzu
The challenge with harnesses for shih tzu is again the fur, but also the fact that many small dogs, including many shih tzus, are not so happy to have something over their heads.
That's why we recommend step-in harnesses with a little surface area so that the harness doesn't create knots. For example, there's the Sonia harness from The Panters Wife:
If the coat is not a big challenge, many people are happy with the Curli harness, which has a really good fit for the Shih Tzu.
Dog blanket, raincoat, sweater and winter jacket for shih tzu
The challenge with clothing for Shih Tzus is their slightly long body compared to their otherwise small body.
The breed has an undercoat, and it can therefore be a bit difficult to assess whether the dog needs clothing and, if so, how much it needs.
If you notice that your dog is shivering, doesn't really want to go out in the cold, or is otherwise signaling that it is freezing, it is a good idea to give it a jacket.
