Fur care for coton de tulear
The challenge with caring for the Coton de Tulear is that the fine, long fur easily tangles and creates knots. This is a dog that requires a lot of grooming, and the choice of products is far from unimportant.
The Coton de tular does not have an undercoat, but a coat that is very fine and cottony in texture. This means that it needs to be brushed through with a brush and comb to keep knots at bay.
To maintain a fine coat that is not only something to do right after your dog has been to the groomer, we recommend a weekly bath. You can use both dog shampoo and dog conditioner here. Feel free to use a leave-in conditioner spray when you brush your dog throughout the week to soften the coat and make brushing more comfortable.
We have collected the shampoos and conditioners that are favorites of Coton de Tulear owners for you below.
Dog collar for coton de tulear
Coton de tular collar challenge is the fur, which easily tangles and makes knots, and then the dog's size, which means that collars can quickly become too heavy.
Our customers who go to shows with their coton de tular say that they prefer round collars to keep knots out of the fur. We have round collars in a luxury version in soft moose leather from Hunter.
Another type of collar that is good for coton de tular is the very light nylon collar. Nylon is so smooth that the fur slides around the collar more easily, instead of getting tangled. The collar from The Painters Wife fits most Coton de tular size XS, while slightly larger male dogs should go up to size S. See the different selections below.
Dog harnesses for coton de tulear
The challenge with harnesses for Coton de Tulears is that this small dog cannot carry anything that is too heavy, and that the fur easily tangles. In addition, there are many small dogs, including Coton de Tulears, who are uncomfortable with a harness over their head.
Step-in harness for Coton de Tulear: There is no reason why putting on a harness should be a long and difficult dance, which is why we recommend a step-in harness. Many dogs and dog owners are happy with the Curli harness. However, this harness has a large surface area, and therefore easily creates knots in the fur. There is also Velcro on the harness, which tangles the long fur. Instead, we recommend the step-in harness from The Paintes Wife for dogs with fur like a Coton de Tulear. If you prefer a Curli harness, you can find them right here
This harness is incredibly adjustable, and the breed typically fits size XS or S.
If your Coton de Tulear doesn't mind wearing a harness over his head, there are several options:
Other harnesses for Coton de Tulear: The leather harness from Molly & Stitch doesn't weigh much, is super easy to put on and made from the softest fat leather. A Coton de Tulear often fits a small (XS if your dog is very small). See the size guide on the product to ensure the best fit.
The Y-harnesses from Drew's Dogwear often fit really well on breeds like the Coton de Tulear.
Winter jacket, rain jacket and sweater for coton de tulear
The challenge with clothing for the Coton de Tulear is that even though they have a long coat, they have no undercoat. They are also a small dog that is close to the ground, and these two parameters make the breed easily freeze in the Danish climate.
The small dog is long in relation to how small it is otherwise, so a narrow but long fit is needed.
The rain and winter jackets from Paikka often fit them well, as the popular jackets have many adjustment options. A coton de tulear size 30 or 35 fits here.
Cloud7 makes the finest both transitional and winter jackets in many different models and colors. If your dog is particularly short and long, it may be a good idea to take a look at the jackets that are specially designed for dachshunds here . A coton de tular will typically be a size 2 or 3 in cloud7, however, it is important to emphasize that the models are different, and we therefore recommend that you take a look at the size guide on the applicable jacket. See a selection of the fine jackets below:
A warm sweater may be necessary for the coton de tular as a little extra warmth on cool days or under the rain jacket. The sweaters from The painters wife are made of the finest quality wool, and serve as the perfect transitional model. A size medium will fit most dogs of the breed. The sweater does not need to go all the way to the tail to provide optimal warmth.
The fine Sweater from Tadazhi is also ideal for the breed, it is thin and lovely in ribbed merino wool. The sweater only fits bitches, as it goes very far down the stomach, and therefore will get in the way of male dogs when they have to pee. The sweater comes in 3 different colors, see them all below:
