Here you will find our recommendations for collars, harnesses and clothing that are suitable for a pug.
The typical weight of a Pug is between 6 and 8 kg and our size recommendations are based on these measurements. However, we always recommend that you check the specific measurements for each product to ensure the best fit for your dog.
Remember that you can always return or exchange for a different size at Hunni - both in the store and in the webshop.
Clothes for pugs
One of the biggest challenges in finding clothes for a pug is ensuring a good fit that accommodates the wide chest and at the same time is not too long.
Rain jackets and winter jackets from Cloud7, designed for French bulldogs, are a great solution as they provide extra space for the chest – and therefore also fit a pug well. The jackets are available in several sizes, so we recommend choosing based on your dog's back length and checking the size guide for the specific product.
We have very good experience with the rain and winter jackets from Paikka for pugs, as they can be adjusted so that they are not too long for the short but wide body. The adjustment option ensures a good fit that sits tightly without restricting movement.
Typically, size 30-35 fits a pug well, but we always recommend checking the size guide for the specific product to find the perfect fit for your dog.
When choosing a sweater for a French Bulldog , it is important to find a model that takes into account their wide chest and short back. Many standard models can be too tight across the chest or too long in the back, which can restrict freedom of movement.
Designed specifically for French Bulldogs, the sweater has a roomy fit around the chest while not being too long. They are ideal for chilly days when your dog needs a little extra warmth without overheating.
If you are new to knitting a sweater yourself, we also have a knitting pattern specifically for French bulldogs, which will also suit your pug.
Dog collar for Pug
One of the challenges in finding the right collar for a Pug is their short, wide neck and loose skin, which can cause large collars to fold and fit poorly. Therefore, it is important to choose a collar that is both narrow and soft to ensure a good fit and comfort.
We recommend leather collars from Molly & Stitch, as they are made of soft, fatty leather that naturally shapes to the dog's neck and are comfortable to wear. Most small pugs typically use size M, while slightly larger pugs need size L.
The collar has a width of 2 cm, which makes it a good choice for the pug as it does not feel bulky on a short neck.
The same applies to collars from Nordog, who also make collars that are not too wide for a pug.
Dog harnesses for pugs
One of the challenges in finding the right harness for a Pug is their compact body – a short back combined with a broad chest. This requires a harness that provides good support without being tight or uncomfortable.
The leather harnesses from Molly & Stitch are a great choice for your pug, as they are made of soft, greased leather that molds to your body and provides a comfortable fit. The harness is also easy to put on and take off, making it practical for everyday use.
Small bitches typically fit a size M, while slightly larger bitches and male dogs are between M/L and L. We always recommend checking the size guide to ensure the best fit for your dog.
Another harness model that often fits a pug very well is the step-in harness from Curli. This harness is lightweight, comfortable and easy to put on and take off, making it ideal for the pug's wide chest and compact body.
Females typically wear size M, while males usually fit size L. Some larger pugs may even need size XL. We always recommend measuring your dog and checking the size guide to find the perfect fit.
We also have very good experience with the cross harnesses from Hundekollektivet for the pug. The harness is highly adjustable, which makes it particularly suitable for the pug's slightly atypical body shape compared to many other breeds.
A medium will often fit well, but we always recommend checking the measurements and adjustment options to ensure the best fit for your dog.
What about the Y-belt?
Many people tout the Y-harness as the best harness for all dogs, but for breeds with large heads, like the Pug, this model can be a challenge. Most Y-harnesses do not have an adjustable neck piece, which means that the opening for the head is often too small for the rest of the harness to fit correctly.
However, we have experience with a couple of Y-harnesses that can be adjusted in so many ways that they work really well for a pug. This applies to the Aalborg leather harness from Hunter and the harness from Dog Copenhagen.
In the leather harness from Hunter, most pugs fluctuate between sizes XS and S/M1, while it is typically size S that fits best in the harness from Dog Copenhagen.
We always recommend checking the adjustment options and measurements to find the best fit for your dog.
