Here you will find suggestions for collars, harnesses and clothing that are suitable for dogs of the Maltese breed.
The standard size for a Maltese is 3 – 4 kg.
It is based on these measurements that we make size recommendations. Therefore, it is always a good idea to check the measurements of the different products in relation to your dog.
Remember you can always return or exchange for another size in Hunni, regardless of whether you shop in the store or the webshop.
Maltese grooming
The challenge with Maltese coat care is that the fine, long coat easily tangles and creates knots. This is a dog that requires a lot of coat care, and the choice of products is far from unimportant.
The Maltese does not have an undercoat, but a coat that is more like fine silk hair in structure. This means that it needs to be brushed through with a brush and comb, among other things, to keep knots at bay.
To maintain a fine coat that is not only something to do right after the dog has been to the groomer, we recommend a weekly bath for this breed, using both dog shampoo and dog conditioner. Feel free to use a leave-in conditioner spray when brushing your dog throughout the week to soften the coat and make brushing more comfortable.
Dog collars for Maltese
The challenge with collars for Maltese is that the fur easily tangles and makes knots, and the dog's size makes collars very easily become too heavy.
Our customers who go to shows with their Maltese say that the only thing that keeps tangles and knots away are round collars. Luckily, we have them from Hunter.
Another type of collar that is good for Maltese are the very light nylon collars, and this is because nylon is so smooth that the fur slides around the collar more easily, instead of fraying off the collar. The collar from The Painters Wife fits most Maltese size XS.
Another model that fits this small dog well is the very light "puppy collar" from either our own collection or Drew's Dogwear. Although the collars are made for puppies, most Maltese can fit it, however fully stretched out. For adult dogs, the collar is not suitable for anything other than holding the dog tag, as it is not suitable for use with a leash.
Dog harnesses for Maltese
The challenge with harnesses for Maltese is that this small dog cannot carry anything that is too heavy, and that the fur easily knots.
Many small dogs, including the Maltese, are uncomfortable with a harness over their head. There is no reason for the harness to become a long and difficult dance, and step-in harnesses can therefore be the right way for this type of dog.
Many people like the Curli harness, which has a large surface area - however, this harness easily creates knots in the fur, and we therefore recommend a slightly different step-in harness for the Maltese. It is the step-in harness from The Painters Wife. This harness can be adjusted incredibly well, and the breed typically fits size XS. In a size XS, the harness is as light as it can be with as little material as possible.
If your Maltese doesn't mind wearing a harness over his head, the cross harnesses from both Hundekollektivet and the Y-harnesses from Drew's Dogwear fit this breed really well. The Hundekollektivet harnesses 'Marrskesh' and 'Native Yellow' are made all the way down to a size XS, which is incredibly small. If you have a very small Maltese, this might be the way to go, otherwise the harness is also made in a size S.
Dog blanket, raincoat, sweater and winter jacket for Maltese
The challenge with clothing for Maltese is that even though the Maltese has a long coat, they have no undercoat and the breed therefore freezes easily in the Danish kilma.
The small dog is long in relation to how small it is otherwise, so a narrow but long fit is needed. This is exactly what can be found at Cloud7, which makes both nice rain jackets and soft and light winter jackets. These will be available in autumn 2022.
A warm sweater may be necessary for the Maltese, who like us in the fall and spring wants to be a little warm in a big jacket, but who still needs a little extra on the cool days. The sweaters from The painters wife are made of the finest quality wool, and serve as the perfect transitional model.
The small dog usually needs outerwear in the autumn and winter periods. Cloud7 makes the finest both transitional and winter jackets in many different models and colors. If your dog is particularly short and long, it may be an idea to take a look at the jackets that are specially designed for dachshunds here . A Maltese will typically be a size 2 in cloud7, however, it is important to emphasize that the models are different, and we therefore recommend that you take a look at the size guide on the applicable jacket. See a selection of the fine jackets below:
Another super nice rain and winter jacket is the one from Paikka. The jackets are 100% waterproof, and one large reflector makes it easy to see the dog in the dark. The jackets are super adjustable and can be adapted to most dogs. See a selection of the jackets below.
