Maintenance
It is recommended to brush the coat daily to avoid tangles, but at least 3 times a week, and to bathe the dog approximately every 15 days.
Brushing
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels have a soft, silky coat that requires regular brushing to prevent tangles – especially on the ears, chest, legs, and tail, where the coat is longest. Use a soft brush or comb that can gently work through the coat and keep it smooth and well-maintained.
Clipping
Clipping is not necessary, but the coat can be lightly trimmed around the paws, ears, and hindquarters for better hygiene and a neat appearance. The natural length of the legs, tail, and feathering should be preserved to highlight the breed's characteristic look.
Special attention:
It is important to maintain good hygiene around the eyes and ears to avoid infections. The coat can tend to tangle, especially when longer, so it is always recommended to go through it with a comb after brushing to catch any remaining knots.
Recommended grooming visits
This coat type – especially if kept long – should be professionally groomed approximately every 8 weeks, with a bath in between. Regular visits to a dog groomer help keep the coat in optimal condition.
Brushes for Cavalier King Charles Spaniel
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels have long feathering that should be brushed weekly to prevent tangles.
It is recommended to use both a brush and a comb to keep the coat free of knots, while shorter areas can be maintained with a deshedding tool.
A spray conditioner can make grooming easier by reducing tugging on the coat and adding moisture and shine.
Deshedding tools also help maintain the coat's characteristic shine, softness, and color by removing loose undercoat during shedding periods.

Shampoo and conditioner for Cavalier King Charles Spaniel
Bathing is an important part of care to keep the Cavalier's skin and coat clean and free from bad odor.
Using products tailored to the coat type ensures thorough cleaning while conditioning and moisturizing the coat, keeping it healthy and balanced.
Finishing with conditioner is important to prevent dryness, preserve color, and reduce the risk of tangles.
Trimming a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels have a long, silky coat with natural feathering on the ears, chest, legs, and tail. The coat should not generally be cut short, as the breed's characteristic look lies precisely in its soft, slightly wavy coat and elegant lengths.
Coat care therefore primarily involves maintenance rather than actual clipping. Light trimming can be beneficial to keep the coat neat and functional for everyday life – especially around the paws and paw pads, as well as the hindquarters to ensure good hygiene.
The longer coat areas on the ears, legs, tail, and chest should be preserved but can be gently shaped with scissors to highlight the dog's natural lines and provide a well-groomed appearance. Regular, light trimming is usually sufficient to keep the coat healthy, soft, and tangle-free.

Nail clippers for Cavalier King Charles Spaniel
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels have relatively small to medium-sized nails, which require nail clippers of an appropriate size to be trimmed safely and precisely.
Correctly sized nail clippers provide better control and make it easier to clip in small, careful steps. This reduces the risk of hitting the quick and ensures a clean and neat result.
Choose nail clippers suitable for small to medium-sized breeds to achieve good precision and confidence during clipping.
