Maintenance
It is recommended to brush a Maltese several times a week and bathe it approximately every 14 days to keep its coat clean, soft, and free of mats.
Brushing
A Maltese has a long, silky coat that easily tangles and forms knots. Regular brushing is therefore necessary to keep the coat healthy and well-groomed. Always use gentle brushes, combs, and grooming products that do not wear down the coat or skin.
Clipping
A Maltese can be kept in the classic long coat or clipped into a more practical everyday style.
With a long coat, a clear parting is often seen along the back, where the fur falls down on both sides of the body. The fur around the paws is trimmed so that it appears full and round, while the body fur is kept long enough that it does not drag on the ground.
It is also recommended to trim:
• Around the eyes to ensure clear vision
• Around the mouth to prevent food residue in the fur
• Around the paws for better hygiene and footing
• Around the hindquarters to keep the area clean
Special attention
Due to the length of its coat, it easily mats. Make sure to keep the coat well moisturized to avoid dryness, which can lead to broken hairs and more mats.
Recommended grooming visits
It is recommended to visit a professional groomer every 6–8 weeks for bathing, brushing, and light trimming to prevent mat build-up.
Brushes for Maltese
A Maltese has a long and silky coat that requires regular care to remain free of mats and tangles.
It is recommended to brush and comb the coat thoroughly several times a week with a suitable brush and comb to keep the coat healthy and well-groomed down to the skin.
A detangling or conditioning spray makes brushing easier and adds moisture and shine to the coat. At the same time, it helps prevent mats and broken hairs. This makes detangling gentler and more comfortable for the dog.

Shampoo and conditioner for Maltese
Regular baths are important to keep a Maltese clean, fragrant, and well-groomed.
Bathing helps remove dirt and keeps the light coat beautiful and fresh. It is typically recommended to bathe a Maltese every 3-4 weeks, or more often if the coat is kept long.
A conditioner after bathing is particularly important for this breed, as it adds moisture, helps prevent tangles, and makes the coat easier to comb out. It also helps maintain the coat's natural shine.

Maltese Trimming
A Maltese has a long coat that grows continuously and therefore requires regular trimming or clipping to remain well-groomed and tangle-free.
Many choose to have the coat cut into a practical everyday style, which makes daily grooming easier and reduces the risk of knots. If you prefer the classic long Maltese coat, it requires frequent brushing and continuous maintenance.
It is especially recommended to trim:
• Around the eyes to ensure clear vision
• Around the mouth to avoid food residue in the coat
• Around the paws for better hygiene and footing
• Around the hindquarters to keep the area clean

General care for Maltese
Eyes: Malteses with light coats can develop discolouration around the eyes due to tear staining. Daily cleaning of the eye area helps prevent stains and keeps the fur around the eyes clean and neat.
Ears: It is important to keep the ears clean as part of regular grooming to prevent irritation and discomfort.
Teeth: Regular brushing helps prevent tartar and keeps breath fresh.
Skin and Coat: Malteses with light coats can be sensitive to the sun's rays. Ensure shade on hot days and keep the coat well-groomed and moisturised to prevent dryness.

Nail clippers for Maltese
The Maltese is a small dog with delicate, relatively thin nails that require small and precise nail clippers for safe trimming.
A smaller clipper provides better control and makes it easy to trim in small, careful steps. This reduces the risk of hitting the quick and ensures a clean and neat result.
Choose nail clippers suitable for small breeds to ensure maximum precision and safety during trimming.
