Maintenance
Brush a Pug once a week to remove loose hair and keep the coat neat. A bath once a month is usually sufficient to keep the dog clean.
Brushing
A Pug has a short coat that sheds a lot. Regular brushing with a soft brush or hard slicker brush helps remove excess hair and reduce shedding in the home.
Clipping
Pugs are a short-haired breed and should not be clipped, as their coat naturally renews itself and protects the skin.
Special attention
Pay extra attention to skin folds – especially on the face – as dirt and moisture can easily accumulate here and lead to irritation. Clean the folds regularly and ensure they are kept dry. Also keep an eye on the elbows, as the skin here can become dry and crack.
Recommended grooming visits
A monthly bath is often enough to help with shedding. Use a moisturizing shampoo that cares for both skin and coat and helps keep your Pug healthy and well-groomed.
Brushes for Pugs
Pugs, with their short coats, typically go through two heavy shedding periods a year.
Weekly brushing with a soft brush helps reduce the amount of loose hair in the home.
Toothed brushes (slickers) can be used to remove hair that is about to detach from the hair follicles during shedding. Undercoat rakes are effective for managing the dense undercoat and help maintain the dog's natural protection.

Shampoo and conditioner for Pugs
A Pug's hygiene is easily maintained with a monthly bath, using products that both cleanse and nourish the coat.
A good trick for removing loose hair is to use a conditioner after bathing, which helps loosen hairs and soften the coat.

Clipping a Pug
Clipping a Pug is not recommended, as the breed's short coat naturally renews itself and serves as protection against both cold and heat. If the coat is clipped, it can disrupt its natural function and affect its ability to regulate temperature.
General care for Pugs
Skin folds: Pugs have distinct skin folds – especially on their face – where moisture and dirt can easily accumulate. Clean the folds regularly and ensure they are kept dry to prevent irritation and infection.
Eyes: Pugs can be prone to tear staining, which can cause discoloration around the eyes. Daily cleaning helps prevent stains and keep the area clean.
Ears: Ear hygiene is important and should be a regular part of their care to avoid irritation and discomfort.
Teeth: Frequent teeth brushing helps keep their breath fresh and prevents tartar buildup.

Nail Clippers for Pugs
Pugs are small, compact dogs with relatively small (sometimes thick) nails, which require appropriately sized nail clippers for safe and precise trimming.
Nail clippers for small dogs provide good control and make it easier to trim nails in small increments, reducing the risk of hitting the quick.
