Maintenance
It is recommended to brush the coat approximately 3 times a week and bathe the dog every 14 days.
Brushing
Frequent brushing is important to keep the coat free from tangles. Always use gentle tools and products that will not damage the coat.
Clipping
The Shih Tzu is a long-haired breed with a natural parting along the back, where the coat falls down on each side. The coat is typically kept long and only lightly trimmed at the ends when it reaches the ground. The top is often gathered into a topknot, which can be secured with a bow.
Special attention
Due to the length of the coat, it easily tangles. Make sure to keep the coat well moisturized to prevent dryness, which can lead to broken hairs and more tangles.
Recommended grooming visits
It is recommended to visit a professional groomer every 6–8 weeks for bathing, brushing, and light trimming to prevent the accumulation of tangles.
Brushes for Shih Tzu
The long coat of a Shih Tzu requires regular grooming to stay beautiful and tangle-free. Weekly brushing with the right tools helps prevent matting and keeps the coat healthy.
For daily maintenance, a boar bristle brush is ideal for finer coats, as it adds shine and works gently on the top layers. For more stubborn tangles, a pin brush with tips is a good choice, as it loosens the coat effectively without irritating the skin.
A conditioning spray can be used to add moisture and make brushing gentler. If tangles occur, they can be loosened with a detangler and a suitable brush without bothering the dog.

Shampoo and conditioner for Shih Tzu
Regular baths are essential to keep both skin and coat in good condition. Generally, one bath a month is sufficient, but for long-haired dogs, it may be necessary more often.
A conditioner after bathing helps maintain moisture in the coat, prevents tangles, and protects the color.

Shih Tzu Clipping
The Shih Tzu has a long, silky coat that requires regular trimming to keep it neat and practical for everyday life. Many choose to keep the coat shorter in a "puppy cut" style, which is easier to maintain, while others preserve the long coat with light trimming of the ends.
Regardless of length, it's important to keep the hair around the eyes, paws, and rear well-groomed and free from annoying hairs so the dog both looks good and is comfortable.

General care for Shih Tzu
Light-colored Shih Tzus can get tear stains under their eyes due to tear production, so it's a good idea to clean the area daily. Also, keep the ears clean when brushing to avoid irritation and discomfort.
Regular tooth brushing prevents tartar and contributes to fresher breath.

Nail clippers for Shih Tzu
The Shih Tzu is a small dog with delicate, relatively thin nails, requiring small and precise nail clippers for safe trimming.
A smaller nail clipper provides better control and makes it easy to clip in small, careful steps. This reduces the risk of hitting the quick and ensures a clean and neat result.
Choose nail clippers suitable for small breeds to achieve maximum precision and safety during clipping.
