How to teach your dog to relax at a cafe
Are you one of those people who loves taking your dog to a cafe, to work, or to visit friends and family? Or does that sound completely unrealistic with your particular dog?
It rarely requires luck – but often a little training and good routines. Fortunately, most dogs can learn that sometimes, nothing is supposed to happen.
Here, we've gathered some tips on how to teach your dog to settle down when you're on the go.
How to train "Relax on the mat"
Do you dream of enjoying a quiet cup of coffee at a cafe while your dog relaxes by your side? Then "Relax on the mat" is a really good exercise to work on.
You can also use commands like "Place," "Basket," or something else entirely – the most important thing is that it makes sense for you and your dog.
What you'll need:
• A dog mat or a dog carrier (for smaller dogs)
• Small, delicious treats
Start at home in a calm environment
Begin training at home without distractions.
Place the mat on the floor and let your dog explore it at their own pace. Reward even small actions such as:
• Sniffing the mat
• Putting a paw on it
• Standing on it
• Sitting or lying on it
When your dog starts to lie down voluntarily on the mat, you can begin to reward calm behavior.
Gradually increase the time between rewards so your dog learns that it's the relaxation that is being rewarded.
Keep it calm and simple
If your dog gets up again, avoid making a big deal out of it.
Quietly guide them back to the mat and try again.
The goal is not to correct harshly – but to teach the dog that the mat is a place to relax.
Take the mat on the go
Once the exercise works at home, you can start taking the mat with you.
This could be:
• To a cafe
• To a restaurant
• To work
• To visit friends and family
Because the mat is already associated with calm and security, many dogs will find it easier to settle in new environments.
Practice calmness in everyday life
You don't have to wait for a cafe visit to practice.
For example, on a walk, you can sit on a bench for a few minutes and practice that things don't necessarily have to be happening all the time.
If your dog already knows the mat from home, you can bring it along.
Take the time it takes
Some dogs learn quickly, while others need a little more time.
Stay seated until your dog begins to settle down. When they relax, you can quietly praise them and move on.
Your dog will eventually learn that calmness is also a task – and that good things actually happen when they relax ❤️
Psst… small and extra tasty treats often make training a little easier 😉
